Pakistan Day Speech Competition – Press Release
In connection with Pakistan Day 23rd March, an inter-university Speech Competition on: “Role of Women in Development of Pakistan” was organized at al-Raazi Hall, University of the Punjab as a collaborative effort of Institute of Administrative Sciences (IAS) and Stylo Pvt. Ltd. Pakistan. Student Affairs department, University of the Punjab played a major role in bringing the best talent forward through their mentors. Participants from several universities including UMT, UET, LSE, UCP, Superior University and different institutes of PU were included in the competition. Worthy Vice Chancellor of University of the Punjab, Dr. Zaffar Mueen Nasar graced the occasion as a Chief Guest whereas Director Stylo Pvt. Ltd. Pakistan, Mr. Javaid Iqbal Siddiqui joined as Guest of Honor. Dean Faculty of Economics and Management Sciences and Director IAS, Prof. Dr. Nasira Jabeen served as the event Chair. Mr. Nasir Rafique, HOD Stylo Pvt. Ltd. and Muhammad Zahid senior faculty member, IAS joined as special guests. The panel of Judges included Professor Dr. A.R. Jafri from University of the Punjab, Ms. Fatimah Mudassar from Lahore School of Economics, Mr. Muhammad Ali Nasir from Head Office of Participant Affairs, UMT, Mr. Shahid Mehmood Gul, Director Student Affairs, University of the Punjab, Mr. Hamza Tarrar – Anchorperson City42. To acknowledge students’ efforts, IAS also invited some special guests from its alumni body who have been a great support to the institute in one way or another including Mr. Jamil Ahmad Khan, Vice President National Bank of Pakistan, Mr. Omar Farooq from Pepsi Co., Mr. Adnan Ibrahim from JetGreen Airlines, Ms. Kiran Faheem, brand owner KF. Owner SOZO Group of companies and Ex-chairperson LCCI, Mr. Sohail Lashari also joined the event. IAS Faculty members including; Dr. Nighat Ansari, Dr. Yaamina Salman, Dr. Amani Moazzam, Dr. Sidra Irfan, Dr. Sobia Khurram, Dr. Shahid Khokhar, Dr. Ali Rehman, Ms. Madiha Waheed, Ms. Ayesha Hanif, Ms. Zahra Paul, Ms. Urooj Qamar, Ms. Iman Saleem, Ms. Umme Farwah Mubasher, Mr. Zeeshan Hanif, Mr. Arslan Qaiser etc. joined the event.
The event started with the national anthem that enthralled the audience with spirit of patriotism, followed by beautiful recitation of Holy Quran by Mr. Zamin Abbas, student at IAS. Mr. Hafiz Junaid, student at IAS, presented a soul soothing Naat. An opening speech on the theme and objectives of the event was given by Prof. Dr. Nasira Jabeen where she emphasized and elaborated on the importance of the role of women in the country since independence struggle of our beloved homeland Pakistan. The integral role that women have been playing is appreciable. She shared the quotes of the Father of the nation, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinaah from one of his speeches at Aligarh University 1944 that, “No nation can rise to the height of glory unless your women are side by side with you. We are victims of evil customs. It is a crime against humanity that our women are shut up within the four walls of the houses as prisoners”. To further highlight, Dr. Jabeen shared the poetic verses of Faiz and Ahmed Nadeem Qasmi to highlight the theme of the event. Prof. Jabeen shared the statistics of women related initiatives by the Government of Pakistan i.e. 17% representation of women at Federal and Provincial level and 33% representation of women at Local council level of governance. She shared the positive and productive initiatives for women by the Punjab Government including the establishment of Women Development Department, Punjab commission on status of women, Day care centers, working women hostel, Women Empowerment Program, Women Leadership Program, and Cyber Complaint Cell. She emphasized on the fact that change should be brought without any gender discrimination for all and for that we have to be role model. It can further best be implemented through industry and academia linkages and initiatives. Dr. Nasira acknowledged the support of the vice Chancellor, Dr. Zaffar Mueen Nasar towards the event. She also thanked Mr. Shahid Mehmood Gul – Director Student Affairs, Mr. Muhammad Zubair Akram – Deputy Director – Student Affairs, the panel of judges and special thanks to Mr. Javaid Iqbal Siddiqui – Director Stylo Pvt. Ltd. Pakistan.
The speech competition was then declared open by the Worthy Vice Chancellor and six participants for Urdu speeches were presented. The environment of the hall was enjoyed by all the audience and guests as the passion and zeal of all attendees could be seen while they were waving the Pakistan’s flags. A national song, “Aey Watan Pyaray Watan” was sung by Haseeb-ul-Hassan, student of IAS and a professional singer. Six participants of English Speeches continued to present after this national musical performance. Another special performance with Sitaar and Tabla was presented by Muhammad Effendi, student of IAS and a professional Sitaarist who has performed at international level
Chief Guest for the event, worthy Vice Chancellor, University of the Punjab, Dr. Zaffar Mueen Nasar expressed his views on women empowerment and their role in the history of Pakistan along with their progress in various fields. He said the mindset of the society needs to be changed in this regard which is only possible through education system. He advised the youth to fully utilize from their education and spread awareness in the remote areas of Pakistan to lead the positive and productive changes in the society. He said that we have to give back the status of women that they deserve in the society. His address was quite stimulating and inspiring.
Mr. Sohail Lashari, owner Sozo group of companies shared his sentiments with the audience on the very topic of women and their inevitable role in the development of society. He stressed on the importance of having a vision for the youth that can drive them towards their life goals.
Towards the end, a note of thanks was presented by Mr. Javai Iqbal Siddiqui, Director Stylo Pvt. Ltd. Pakistan. Like all distinguished guests, Mr. Siddiqui also expressed his strong link with the topic of the day, i.e. role of women in development. He talked on the integral role of women as nation builders and regarded them as the secret of every success based on all the responsibilities that they perform at every level. He also shared his corporate strategy of inclusion of women in the workforce of Stylo Pvt. Ltd. Pakistan.
Results were announced by the panel of judges keeping in view the content, style, pronunciation and delivery of the speeches. A prize distribution ceremony was held for all the winners, participants and management team. First and second position holders were awarded with cash prizes. Mr. Usman Aqeel from Institute of Communication Studies, University of the Punjab stood first in Urdu Speech, and Ms. Shaista Fajar from Zoology Department, University of the Punjab was the runner up in Urdu Speech. Mr. Shahan Azhar from Punjab University College of Information Technology stood first in English speeches whereas, Ms. Fizzah from Bio-Technology, university of the Punjab was runner up for the English speech. Souvenirs and bouquets were presented to the worthy Vice Chancellor, Professor Dr. Zaffar Mueen Nasar, Mr. Javaid Iqbal Siddiqui, Head of Stylo Pakistan, Professor Dr. Nasira Jabeen, honorable judges and Mr. Shahid Gul, Director Student Affairs to acknowledge their contribution. A group photo of all the members and guests was taken to capture the pleasant memories of the event followed by lunch at committee room for the dignitaries.
